We are hard-wired to remember things better when we hear stories than we would if we speak in industry jargon or techie speak. In episode 140, I talked to David Otey about incorporating stories into technical talks and the impression you can make when you do so. In today’s quick fix Friday, I’m going to give you three business storytelling tips that have served me to just tell really quick, easy stories that people engage with.
Three Business Storytelling Tips:
- Only have one main point for your story and focus on it. Telling business stories can be difficult and we sometimes get stuck in the trap that we need to add more to make it engaging. But instead you can get lost. When you have a point that you’re trying to make, then you can decide what you can pull from your life and experiences to help illustrate that point.
-
Keep it really simple. Try not to add too many extraneous details that don’t really matter or don’t really help support the point. That will help keep your audience to stay engaged and really drive your point home.
- Leverage emotion in your story. It makes for a much better story when you can bring emotional feeling into that story and really dig down to how it felt. You’re going to be able to really grip the reader and keep them reading all the way to the end.
