After my interview with Stephanie McHugh, I wanted to share with you 3 tips that will help you get started in standup comedy.
Tip #1: Just get started. What are you waiting for? Just try it. It’s okay to try as Stephanie said. Take a class, even one that is online, that’ll help you craft your jokes, get you familiar with what standup comedy is all about, and make sure that you’re writing a good set to get started. The advantage of a class is that it kind of then forces you to have a performance, which is really fun.
Tip #2: Take baby steps. Comedy can feel overwhelming when you don’t know where to start. Maybe step one is finding an open mic night or even going to the open mic night. Find a friend to go with, see what other comedians are doing, and write down some ideas about what they’ve done that worked and didn’t work for you. Just meet some of the people, and I think that will help you get your confidence up to do it live.
Tip #3: Don’t worry about what other people think. Comedy can be really hard. It’s hard when jokes fall flat that you think are really funny. That’s going to happen, and like Stephanie said, it is going to hurt sometimes, but if you have a short memory, and just keep going, you’re going to find the laughs.
BONUS Tips:
-
Every audience isn’t going to be for you.
-
Practice adding humor into different situations you might be in, like maybe you’re presenting at work or maybe it’s just kind of noticing what your friends are laughing at, and writing that down to form it into a joke is a great idea.
-
If you are interested in getting started in standup read the book “The New Comedy Bible” by Judy Carter
