Have you ever wanted to know how to start a nonprofit but were simply overwhelmed by all of the tasks? Then today’s episode is for you. I am going to share with you 6-steps that we uncovered in Laura Stack’s interview in Episode 16, where we talked to her about how she started her successful nonprofit, Johnny’s Ambassadors, after the suicide death of her son due to high THC marijuana.
Here is a quick glimpse into this episode:
Step #1: Get really clear on your mission and focus, this will help give your nonprofit a way to measure its success.
Step #2: Use your network and learn. Leverage state and national organizations to help you understand the full process and seek out clubs or masterminds with others who are seeking to start nonprofits as well.
Step #3: Hire a great board of directors, they will help guide you and give direction to your new nonprofit. (Check out some references below)
Step #4: Get a lawyer, they will help you get your nonprofit set up correctly from the beginning.
Step #5: Get all the paperwork filed. Be realistic about how long the approval process can take, there is a lot of paperwork to be filed (which is another reason a lawyer is helpful!)
Step #6: Treat your nonprofit like a business. You will need to market and setup an online presence for your new nonprofit. You will need to find funding and dedicate time to its growth. If you have that mindset early on it will help you grow faster and if you have never built a business before find the support you need to help.
