Age Doesn’t Matter an Interview with Mary Hanna

What could you accomplish if you knew that age doesn’t matter? When you listen to my latest interview with six-time Olympian, Mary Hanna you will learn that in equestrian sports, everyone can ride, no matter their age.

And with an attitude like that, it’s no wonder that Mary has competed in six (hopefully seven) Olympic games in her 40s, 50s and 60s. Listen in to learn about Mary’s tenacity and why her life motto seems to be “Just do it!”

Mary Hanna has represented Australia at six Olympic Games, five World Equestrian Games and has been the Australian National Grand Prix Champion on seven occasions. In 2018, Mary received one of the FEI’s most prestigious accolades, the Gold Badge of Honour. This badge recognizes athletes who have been among the 15 best finishers in the Grand Prix in at least 14 CDIO competitions.

This year also saw her inducted into the Equestrian Victoria Hall of Fame. You can read more about her journey in her book “A Long Rein”.

Here is a glimpse into the episode:

[1:35] Hear about how Mary first got started with horses in her youth and how that lead to competing in the Olympics.

[8:41] Why does Mary not consider age part of competing?

[11:12] What is it that motivates Mary to keep going, especially through some of the hardships she has endured?

[12:30] What advantage does Mary believe she has competing as someone older in the Olympics?

[14:18] Does Mary believe that society is starting to view older people differently than they have in the past?

[16:58] Find out Mary’s favorite part of the Olympics (besides competing, of course!).

[18:18] What are some of the unexpected obstacles and disappointments that Mary has had to fight her way through?

[23:53] Mary gives advice for anyone who thinks its too late to get started – riding a horse or otherwise.
