Living a Full Life an Interview with Dierdre Wolownick

Every once in a while you meet someone who just blows you away. Deirdre Wolownick is that type of person. At age 70, she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitain for the second time. She broke her own record from when she climbed it previously. She speaks over seven languages and is a prolific author, teacher, runner, artist, and musician. She is truly amazing and I am honored to have interviewed her. Listen in as she shares her views on living a full life.

Dierdre has taught five foreign languages on three continents for 44 years. Her writing has won awards; her independent publishing company produced award-winners and international sellers. In 1990, she founded and conducted the West Sacramento Community Orchestra, and plays in community orchestras and smaller ensembles (flute, piano/keyboard). At 55, she began running marathons and other races. At 59, she started rock climbing; at 66, she became the oldest woman to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan (with her son, Alex Honnold, of “Free Solo” fame). She celebrated her 70th birthday by going up El Cap again, and recently returned from a 3-country European speaking tour. In 2023, the documentary about her life, “Climbing Into Life,” will premiere at film festivals across the country.

Here is a glimpse into the episode:

[2:04] How did Dierdre move from being told “You can’t do that!” to accomplishing everything she sets her mind to?

[8:51] What was it like for Dierdre to become a beginner again?

[11:20]  Does Dierdre come up against obstacles or is it just something new she needs to learn?

[12:40] If there is an obstacle, what does Dierdre say it is?

[14:23] If we are to overcome that obstacle and live a full life, what do we need to do?

[15:58] Has Dierdre ever felt overwhelmed (if you listen to the episode your answer would have to be no!)

[21:52] What are Dierdre’s plans moving forward?

[25:54] What quote(s) inspires Dierdre?
