So you might be thinking, I would love to give a TEDx talk to shine a light on what I’m passionate about or something about my business but you aren’t sure where to start.  In today’s episode of Quick Fix Friday, I’m going to give you three tips for getting your own TEDx talk.

First, you should know that there are some pitfalls to getting a TEDx talk.

Things to consider before booking a TEDx Talk:

  • One of the things you might not realize is that it takes a long time. Occasionally they are booked out over a year in advance, sometimes longer, depending on the location. So you really do have to start early and start your plan.

  • A TEDx talk is not going to magically fix your business. You need to create a plan to leverage that piece of media in your business.

3 Tips to Book A TEDX Talk:

  1. Have a great title and description for your talk. Organizers are looking for something that will hook people with the title but also goes into a unique perspective in the description. You want to communicate the research you’ve done, and the unique angle you have on your topic. Consider that many TEDx events have themes to them, so you want to plug into the theme and really make sure that you know what they’re trying to do with their event.

  2. Consider applying to a local TEDx event. You can apply online on the main TED site, but you might have a better chance of getting in with a local event. Research the local events that are happening and learn how often those events occur so you can get a sense for when to apply.

  3. Connect with the local organizer. This way you become known to them, and you can ask what types of talks they might be looking for and for recommendations on how to stand out. This will also give you a connection for when you do apply.

BONUS TIPS:

  • Do not get discouraged. It takes multiple times oftentimes to get into a TEDx event.

  • Consider ways to showcase your topic in a short way through social media or other speaking events.

  • Hire a coach who is more experienced at getting you into events like this.
