130: Spotting Dyslexia – Quick Fix Friday

In episode 128, I talked to Steve Weaver, who found out later in life that he had dyslexia. This Quick Fix Friday is all about ways to spot dyslexia. And this might be as a late starter, or for someone in your life that you might know. Steve has a special interest in helping people learn about their dyslexia earlier when they’re children so that they can have more success later in life.

If you or someone you knows believes that they have dyslexia, get some assistance, dive into some of the resources that Steve has provided, and see if it might be something you should take further action on. Because the more we know about the conditions we have or things that are affecting us, even later in life, means that we can continue to be successful in a bigger way and maybe just learn a little bit more about how we operate.

British Documentary:

In July 2010, Kara Tointon (British actress and star in EastEnders) recorded a documentary for BBC Three called Kara Tointon: Don’t Call Me Stupid. The program examined the impact dyslexia can have on people’s lives and the difference different learning styles can have on people with dyslexia. Tointon revealed that she suffers from dyslexia and has a reading age of 12. During the program, Tointon visited Shapwick School in Somerset, which specializes in the education of pupils with dyslexia, and talked with the pupils about their experiences. Tointon was taught various line learning and organizational techniques by Dyslexia Tutor Claire Salter.

Kara Tointon: “I want to know where my personality begins, and dyslexia ends. I’m fed up with putting things on hold and having this vision that one day I’m going to be something different to who I am now”.

Testing for students can be done at the school or university.

Testing for adults is very expensive. There are several facilities that administer the test. Universities with master’s degree programs in testing will provide service at a discounted rate. Like Denver University and the University of Colorado Denver. They will be in either the psychology or education departments.
